Background

On December 2003 the work was started by one of the specialist Turkish company to construct Sulaimaniyah International Airport according to the ICAO specifications. It is planned to construct the airport through two stages:

 

Stage One:

Constructions of Arrival, Departure and the VIP terminals. The work was completed on 15th June 2005 and all terminals are ready for use now.

 

Stage Two:

a) Construction of the following:

        1. Aerodrome Control Tower.

         2. Runway with its lighting systems and markings.

         3. Taxiways with their lighting systems and markings.

         4. Apron with all related lights and markings.

         5. Fire Fighting Station.

         6. Meteorological Station with all related equipment.

         7. Catering Building with all required equipment and facilities.

         8. Cargo building.

         9. Aviation Security Office.

         10. Administration Building.

         11. Car Park.

         12.  Aerodrome Fence with its related Guard Towers.

         13.  Service Road surrounding the airport. 
         14. potable & water treatment system

 

b) Installation of the followings:

        1. Navigational Aids.

        2. Voice and Data Communication Systems.

        3. Airfield Lighting Systems.

        4. Visual Aids

 This stage is finished on 4th Sept 2005 .

Opening Date

The airport has been opened for operations to all types of aircraft and all flights (Passengers and Cargo) on 20th July 2005

 

Airport Location

The airport is located west of Sulaymaniyah city at 15 km distance from the city center.

Its coordinates are:

35˚33′38.88′ N

045˚18′52.98′ E (located at the center of the runway)

 

 

Airport Area

The total area of the airport is approximately 13.5 square kilometers.

 

Airport Capacity

The total capacity of the airport terminals is 1.5 million passengers per year, with high possibility to be increased to 3 million passengers per year.

           7. Mosque 

 

VIP Terminal

Its Total Area is 250 square meters with well furnished large sitting room.

 

 

Connecting Building

It connects between the Departure and Arrival Terminals and includes the followings:

Airport manager office
Flight crew room
Flight operation office
Briefing office (ATC and MET)
Medical facilities room
Meeting Hall
Staff restaurant
Control and monitoring room
 

Catering Building

Total area is 461 square meters. Equipped will all required equipment and facilities.

 

Cargo Building

Total area 250000 square meters.

 

Aerodrome Control Tower

Constructed on an area of about 82 square meters with 31 meters height. Designed to achieve the required vision for the Air Traffic Controller at all directions. The tower is equipped with all required equipment and facilities according to the ICAO standards.

 

Fire Fighting Station

Total area is 620 square meters. It is connected by special roads to the runway, taxiways and apron. Designed to accommodate large Fire Fighting Trucks, Class Room, and Early Warning office and work shop.

 

Administration and Technical Building
Two floors building, constructed on an area of 1140 square meters, which includes the Director General’s office, administration, finance, Engineering auditing and legal offices.

Taxiways Characteristic

 Main Taxiway parallel to the runway. Its length 3500 meters (11667FT), width 30 meters (100FT) with 3 meters shoulders on each side.

Two High Speed Taxiways for the connection of Runway and Main Taxiway. The width of each is 27 meters (90FT) with 7.5M (25FT) shoulders on each side. All Taxiways Surfaces are Concrete.

  Airport is equipped with Doppler Very High Frequency Omni Directional Radio Range(D/VOR) and Instrument Landing System Category І ( ILS CAT I ) for Rumway 31 and Runway 13 both collocated with DME / P

 Communication Systems

        1. Air - Ground VHF Voice Communication System.

        2. Air - Ground UHF Voice Communication System.

        3. VHF/UHF Emergency Frequencies: VHF 121.5 MHZ and UHF 243 MHZ

        4. Ground - Ground Voice Communication System through Telephone Lines.

        5. Ground - Ground Communication system through AFTN.
